 Goa, known for its scenic beaches and vibrant nightlife, also has a rich Islamic heritage. Here are five mosques in Goa that are significant both historically and architecturally:

1. Jama Masjid, Sanguem


Located in Sanguem, South Goa, this mosque was originally built in the 16th century and later reconstructed in 1959.

The architecture features a blend of Indo-Islamic styles with elegant minarets and domes.

It is a peaceful place for worship and an important religious site for the local Muslim community.

2. Safa Masjid, Ponda

Built in 1560 by Adil Shah of Bijapur, this is one of the oldest mosques in Goa.

It is surrounded by lush gardens and features a large water tank in front.

The mosque’s simple yet striking design reflects Indo-Islamic influences.


3. Surla Tar Mosque, Bicholim


Dating back to the Adil Shahi era, this mosque is located in North Goa’s Bicholim region.

It is known for its peaceful ambiance and historical significance.

The mosque’s structure remains well-preserved, offering insights into Goa’s Muslim heritage.


4. Masjid-ul-Abrar, Vasco da Gama

Situated in Vasco da Gama, this mosque serves as a key place of worship for the local Muslim community.

It has a simple yet elegant structure, with a prominent dome and minarets.

The mosque is particularly busy during Friday prayers and Islamic festivals.


5. Namazgah, bicholim


The Namazgah in Bicholim is a 15th-century open-air prayer area, known as an Eidgah, used for special congregational prayers like Eid. Perched atop a hill, it offers panoramic views of the surrounding area. The structure showcases a blend of Persian and Mughal architectural styles, featuring a square enclosure with arched openings and a dome, along with balconies reminiscent of Portuguese 'balcão' designs. It was constructed in 1683 for Prince Akbar II, the rebellious son of Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb.
